Sandwich Harbour

Where the dunes pour straight into the cold Atlantic — reachable only by 4x4, timed to the tide.

Where in Namibia · Sandwich Harbour

Where the colossal walls of the ancient Namib Desert plunge directly into the roaring Atlantic surf lies Sandwich Harbour—a dramatic, surreal collision of landscapes found nowhere else on earth.

Accessible only via an adrenaline-fueled 4x4 drive along a narrow beach trapped between towering sand walls and the crashing ocean, this remote lagoon is a designated Ramsar wetland. It serves as a vital sanctuary for up to 200,000 birds, including vast flocks of pink flamingos.

Rich in history, this wild frontier was once a bustling 19th-century whaling port. Fresh water from deep aquifers still trickles up through the sand at the ocean’s edge. By 1890, dynamic coastal storms silted up the channel, permanently abandoning the settlement to the desert winds and sea birds.

Twenty-five years of quality experiences through raw nature

Armand Basson has spent more than twenty-five years driving the remote corners of southern Africa, and is known across Namibia for his skill and professionalism in deep sand. Driving to Sandwich Harbour is not a matter of pointing a 4x4 south: it needs a working knowledge of the tides and of soft, shifting tracks that change week to week — which is exactly what he brings. As a registered Namibian tour operator he also holds the concession permits that open ground the public cannot reach.
